NovionOS

An effort to design an operating system optimized for a robot, sunset when the maintenance cost outweighed the expected gain.

A case study in changing direction when infrastructure stops serving the product question.

01 / Problem

The project explored whether an operating system designed around a robot would create enough practical advantage to justify owning the entire platform.

02 / What I built

Worked as the sole developer on the NovionOS direction and evaluated the cost of a robot-specific operating system against the value it would add.

How the pieces connect.

The most important system outcome was a boundary decision: preserve the robotics work while replacing the custom-OS dependency with Raspberry Pi OS.

Engineering decision

Technical ambition is useful only while it advances the problem the system exists to solve.

Tradeoff

Sunsetting the custom OS gave up platform ownership but recovered time for the AI and hardware behavior that motivated the work.

What happens next

No restart is planned; the useful continuation is Scout rather than another custom operating system.

NovionOS is sunset. Its clearest result is the decision to narrow scope and continue the robotics exploration as Scout.
